I was delighted to read the article by Robert Sullivan, ‘The Waver’s Dilemma’ (RW August). After working for several years in Eastern Europe, where nobody waves, I think this is a truly British phenomenon. I always wave. If someone else is out making the effort to run, this simple acknowledgement says everything. It’s like the Masons’ handshake, a gesture of encouragement, friendship and kindredship.
If runners acknowledge you with a grunt or gesture you feel lifted as they jog past, rather than deflated and ignored. So all you non-wavers take note – no effort is required and this simple gesture of encouragement can mean so much.
